This project has a major emphasis on sustainability. It focuses specifically on sustainable packaging for deodorant. I wanted to design a product that excited the user with its playfulness while being simple and clean enough to keep and display proudly. Since the bottle is refillable, it solves the issue of wastefulness associated with traditional deodorant packaging. I also added another layer of sustainability by utilizing recycled materials.
Problem: Ocean Plastic
Ocean plastic should not be a surprise. But a fact that may be a surprise is that 46% of ocean plastic is discarded fishing nets. These nets are also the most harmful for of ocean plastic. Single use plastic accounts for most of the remaining percent of ocean plastic.
One of Many Solutions
This multifaceted problem demands many solutions. One answer companies like “Bureo” are exploring is to recycle used fishing nets and pelletizing them for use in injection molding.
Playful Design and Interaction
Nautical and Aquatic themes inspired a playful design that is subtle and welcoming to the user.
Wobbling resting position gives the product life and relates it to its source materials.
Ergonomics
A grouping of low fidelity models were created early on to dial in ergonomics and an appealing form users can be proud of.
Dialing It In
Once an ideal form was established, higher fidelity models were created to dial in details and usability.
The line-up
Sub-branded logos and color ways were created to establish varying product identities to suit a variety of demographics within the target market.
Construction
Ōsh is a rollerball style deodorant. The body and caps are injection molded and have the benefit durability which allows for reusability by directing the consumer to purchase refills as an environmental alternative.

The initial purchase of the 4 oz container leads to the consumer’s purchase of a 32 oz refill allowing prolonged use through a closed loop system.
Scents can be changed without the purchase of a new dispensing unit.
Sustainability in Every Step
